Welcome!

Hi there, I am Nicole. This blog is simply my little corner of the writing world. I used to own and operate the previous website known as Freelance Writer's Exchange, but my focus changed a lot and I decided to let that go and run with this.

I am a YA & Women's Fiction writer. Trying my hand at my first steamy romance novel. Wife. Mom to 5. Freelance contributor to family, food & lifestyle pubs. I love chocolate, books, photography, scrapbooking & Sushi. Not necessarily in that order.

I absolutely love comments, and love meeting new people, so please be sure and leave a comment so I know you've visited, and so I can come visit you.

Suite 101 – Got Words?

Completely on a whim, I decided to apply at Suite 101 just to see what would happen. I have written for some pretty big named sites on the Internet, but when I applied to Suite101 in May 2008, I got turned down. Back then I was writing for families.com. Uhm. Okay.

So I put it on the back burner, and last night thought about it again. I applied using the SAME two clips I had used back then (the same two I tend to use most of the time because they have not been published anywhere).

Within two hours I got an email congratulating me on being accepted to Suite 101. Wow. I got accepted using the same two writing samples I used last time that seemed to have deemed me not worthy? I changed TWO words to make them past tense. That is all I changed, and honestly if anything – I would have thought that might have been more of a problem than the original way it was written. So funny.

Uhm. So now what? Got any words to share? I have no idea what in the world to write about, since I wasn’t thinking they would accept me again. What articles do well on Suite101? What articles stink on Suite101? I realize it is a residual site, so I want to find articles to write that are interesting and would keep people coming back long term.

Do any of you write for Suite101? Has anyone had my experience? You are rejected and then reapply later, and are accepted? My favorite part is that it was the same two articles. LOL The original “editor” must not have liked my topics. haha

Fill me in on your experiences with this site. I’d love to hear them! :)

    Hi Nicole,

I write for Demand Studios and a few other places. I’ve been considering also writing for suite101 since the earning potential on that site is so huge. It seems like a terrific place to write. Would you mind sharing how you got accepted? What did you put on your resume, and what were your writing samples? Feel free to email if you’d like. (Also, could you please not display my email)

Also, if you have any other questions about suite101, check out the wahm.com forum. They have a section on the forum specifically dedicated to women who write.

    Best of luck,
    Veronica

Hey Veronica, Thank you SO much for finally responding to this post. I was accepted at Demand Studios about a year ago, and have yet to write a single article for them. Actually, I take that back. I think I wrote one, maybe two.

I decided to try out Suite 101 only because I knew I had been turned down in the past and I was annoyed by that. So now I write with Suite 101 and haven’t stuck a single article up there yet, so if and when I do, I will certainly blog my experience.

As far as how I got accepted, I don’t think I did anything different than anyone else would. I won’t post my writing samples because they are the two I use for any site I apply to because they have never been published, but I will say, I had to go through them with a fine tooth comb and make sure that they were all in third person. It was harder than you’d think. The interesting part is that they are the same two I used originally over a year and a half ago, but at that time, I was turned down. Uhm… okay.

As far as what I put on my resume, I have written for several large sites, so of course I put them and then links that directly linked my articles, I explained my experience in writing, showed my blog and I cannot think of anything else.

Ahh…. and the WAHM.com forums. I LIVE On that forum. LOL I love them. But I was having trouble finding much as far as actual experiences go, so I figured I’d ask on my blog. Thank you again for responding, it was nice to hear from someone who was as clueless about Suite 101 as I am (seems like everybody else already knows about it!) haha

Hope my answers helped, and if you have any other questions, just drop a comment (I removed the email) :D

  • I was just rejected by Suite 101 10 minutes ago. I am annoyed, only because I don’t usually get rejected for anything. (Poor me, I know!) I have no freelance writing experience though. I was hoping Suite 101 would be a good place to start. I have always done very well in my English classes through college, so I know grammar and syntax are not the problem. I wish they would have said exactly why I was rejected; knowing the reason would help me improve. I’m probably most bummed about the time I spent researching their style and coming up with two articles. Oh well, where one door closes, another opens! Thanks for the post. It’s comforting to know a professional writer had trouble, too. (As for you submitting the same two articles and having different outcomes, sometimes I wonder if there are robots instead of people who read these things?)

  • Hey there..I wanted to apply to Suite 101 but reading the reviews now I’m scared lol.. But anyhow I’ll probably check articles on the site first and see how they are written so I could format it the same. Take care
